Lee's Noodle House Santa Rosa: Viral TikTok changes fortunes of Vietnamese restaurant

The jjajangmyeon isn't a traditional rendition (it uses the same hand-pulled noodles from the jjamppong, for one), but it's addictive eating if you're a fan of the caramelized black bean sauce being rounded out with a bit of sweetness. Bits of grated sweet potato give it a welcome texture that thwarts some of the usual greasiness and gives the jjajang sauce a texture similar to a fine Bolognese. China Gate has been a fixture in Koreatown for decades, and their jjajangmyeon is as delicious as ever.

ACC Chinese Fast Food

That’s all it took to change the fortunes of a struggling Santa Rosa restaurant — all because of a TikTok video that went viral. At every Korean BBQ outing, there is one unscrupulous person at your table who will survey the banchan, grab the dish of japchae and put it near them. Find that person, and take them to Jeon Ju, and order a plate of their perfectly made, Korean-party-ready japchae. Make sure to bring a book or have some reading material on your phone to avoid looking weird eating by yourself. "And it wasn't just, like, one solid weekend of business. It's been weeks of business, which has, I think, you know, changed their entire business from closing and being able to stay open, which is incredible," Altes said.

The slightly spicy version of the Korean Chinese classic is cheap, greasy, carbohydrate-laden junk food of the most crave-worthy order. Myung Dong's kalguksu refers to a posh district in Seoul, north of the Han River (Gangbuk) where there is actually an alley of competing kalguksu spots squeezed into one small area. The kimchi here is notoriously garlic-heavy and great for dunking in the soup to give it a little heat and extra flavor.

The version at E&J Yummy has a bunched-up texture from the scraping motion used to make them. Diners can choose to add an egg topping to the steamed rice roll, which brings all the flavors together. Noodle Bistro, despite its name, specializes in the art of Cantonese steamed cuisine. Instead of noodles, they excel in serving a variety of steamed rice platters, steamed Chinese dishes, and traditional Cantonese soups.

Worthy side dishes include an order of tangsuyuk (Korean sweet and sour pork) or the Dragon's tender Mongolian Beef. As long as the recipe doesn't change, few places are as worthy of being a permanent fixture on any "best Korean noodles" list as The Corner Place's dongchimi guksu. Refreshing, acidic, vinegary broth is paired with a bed of flour noodles that are simply gone too soon.

Guide to Russian River Valley: Redwoods

"I think, with so much going on in the world, that people want some good news, and we need to get it more into the mix." "It just brings so much love, joy to my family because without the people from the community, I don't know if I can survive," said Vuong Le. But financial troubles started in 2017 when the deadly Tubbs Fire — then the largest wildfire in California history — devastated Santa Rosa. Just one month ago, Lee’s Noodle House in Santa Rosa was filled with empty chairs and tables. You can see the owners just standing there, instead of serving their signature Vietnamese food.

Enter Yuk Dae Jang, which takes one of Korea’s most beloved dishes and adds a healthy helping of wheat flour-based, hand-pulled knife-cut noodles. Traditionalist chefs might be given to pearl-clutching to see Korean royal court food sullied with such nonstandard ingredients as knife-cut noodles in a yukgaejang. With the city’s current obsession with thicker, hand-pulled noodles in noodle soups, however, the reimagining feels timely — and it tastes delicious. Sure, Paik’s Noodle House’s jaengban jjajangmyeon could look better — it’s a stir-fried mess of black bean sauce, pork, shrimp and vegetables on a plate intended for two — but it’s likely no one cares when it tastes as good as it does.

Chef Peter Lai offers off-menu dishes for dinner, including the crispy flower chicken and Dungeness crab curry with pan-fried vermicelli. Garden Cafe is another Hong Kong-style cafe with a menu as big as the Cheesecake Factory’s. Diners can order everything from Indonesian fried rice to wonton noodles, Singaporean-style vermicelli, and even mediocre steak specials. Both locations offer special dishes each week that are advertised on paper menus that can only be obtained at the restaurant. There is a new dish everyday of the week that may include a Chiu Chow-style or five-spice duck, braised short ribs with red sauce, or a Western-style dinner. It’s important to note that both locations do not serve the same specials and the set dinner is only available for pick-up at 3 p.m.

The extensive menu features a variety of options, including pineapple pork buns, congee, clay pot rice, rice rolls, stir-fries, and dumplings. For folks craving traditional Cantonese cuisine or a fusion of Western flavors, Delicious Food Corner has something to satisfy every palate. Their compact dim sum menu combines beloved classics with unique creations, like the sticky rice with chicken, salted egg yolk, and mushrooms wrapped in lotus leaf and torched tableside with molten mozzarella.

With a chewy bed of flour noodles adorned with nice thick cubes of pork and a sauce that's just the right side of greasy and savory, it's classic Korean-Chinese comfort food served up in no-frill digs a little north of Dewey Ave. and Olympic Blvd. Sure, the clam knife-nut noodles are a direct translation of the restaurant's name, but the dish with more relevance for LA residents might be the milmyeon, or Busan-style cold noodles. Similar to naengmyeon, the meaty broth uses more flour in the noodles and comes laced with a healthy dollop of gochujang to spice up the proceedings. Chef Lee’s rendition of the traditional Chinese celebratory dish beggar’s chicken is only available a few times a year and sells out quickly.

Classic flavors include chicken, abalone, pork, scallions, ginger, and thousand-year-old egg. Taste of MP, formerly New Lucky, is a renowned Cantonese food institution in the San Gabriel Valley. Must-try dishes include the silky clam steamed egg, wintermelon soup, salty duck yolk covered pumpkin sticks, and pickled pork belly. They offer affordable lunch specials until 5 pm and stand out by providing complimentary traditional soup during lunch and traditional Chinese dessert with dinner, a rare treat in the area. Yukgaejang, or Korean-style spicy beef soup, exists in a gray area of “soups with some noodles” alongside seolleongtang and gukbap where the noodles (usually dangmyeon, or glass noodles) are a relatively minor aspect of the dish.

The roast duck is a must-order, and the roast pork is only available on the weekends and can be preordered. When it comes to noodles from East Asian cultures, Korean cuisine boasts a staggering breadth of flavors and ways to enjoy the starchy staple at prices in Los Angeles that are generally reasonable. Mr. Chopsticks has been a mainstay in the area for over three decades and is one of a few Cantonese restaurants that still provides free soup at the start of the meal. The lunch menu includes 40-plus affordable and generously portioned specials such as beef chow fun, kung pao shrimp, chicken wings, and salt and pepper shrimp. With 24-hour advance notice, Mr. Chopsticks prepares its famous seafood winter melon soup from scratch, using ingredients from the restaurant’s garden. The entire menu is based on traditional Chinese medicinal principles meant to balance the body for optimal health.

"A huge percentage of them just disappeared in the last couple of years so finding a restaurant near me is one of the top search terms." "It's been like really slow and I think a lot of people left because of the pandemic and the fires so I felt really sorry for them," Le told ABC7 News. SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KGO) -- The pandemic hit small businesses especially hard and many restaurants are still feeling the lasting impact.

Rice Box is the first hip and modern Cantonese restaurant in Los Angeles that really hits the mark. Diners can create custom rice boxes, choosing from the signature char siu (barbecued pork), black soy-poached chicken, crispy seven spice pork belly, or a vegan special. Chef and co-owner Leo Lee uses only organic produce, as well as ethically-sourced, sustainable, and hormone-free meat. The signature char siu barbecued pork uses Duroc pork and is marinated in a family recipe that’s been passed down for more than three decades. The triple-roasted porchetta is marinated overnight, cured, and roasted for three hours in the oven and then smoked.

The cold, chewy acorn-starch noodles are counter-balanced with the crunchy texture of thinly sliced red cabbage, carrots and cucumbers. Mixed together, it's something like a Korean noodle salad, with gochujang spice binding the entire light and refreshing experience with savory and sweet undertones. The jjampong doesn't skimp on the seafood, and the heat from the spices can reach pretty extreme levels.

Almost immediately, new customers were walking in the door, packing into the tiny 50-seat restaurant. Jennifer Le ended up flying home to Northern California to help her parents serve food. It "makes me so sad to see my parents just wait for customers to walk through the door," she wrote in a post on the social media platform, showing an empty restaurant.

Pair it with some solid barbecue for an optimal experience — or just order another bowl. The San Gabriel Valley’s Chinese food explosion began in the 1980s and 1990s when Cantonese and Taiwanese immigrants settled in the area. Characterized by roasting, boiling, steaming, stir-frying, and deep-frying techniques that incorporate fresh ingredients and ample seafood, Cantonese cooking is as diverse as it is delicious. Another hallmark of the genre is wok hei (wok breath), which is a distinct flavor imparted on dishes as the result of sugars and oils caramelizing in a blazing-hot wok. When Erika Altes saw Jennifer Le's TikTok, she urged her own Instagram audience of more than 100,000 people to help the restaurant. But first, she took her family to eat at Lee's to try the food — and told followers of her page, @whiskeyandlace, the meal was delicious.

The Congee

Among their most sought-after dishes are the salted shredded chicken, ginger scallion chicken, XO sauce fried rice (also known as drunken cat fried rice), beef stew, and crispy large intestines. For dessert, they offer peach gum, a superfood and antioxidant derived from peach and Chinese wild peach trees, which has gained popularity in Chinese traditional medicine in recent years. Henry’s Cuisine is a small restaurant specializing in Cantonese cuisine with a hint of Vietnamese influence. Their menu features classic dishes like XO fried rice, vermicelli noodles, salted egg shrimp, and deep-fried salted pig feet.

The roast pork’s crunchy exterior gives way to tender hunks of belly, while the roast duck’s crispy skin sheaths moist, gamey meat. "His daughter was on TikTok pleading to the public to help her dad because he was running out of business because of the COVID thing. I saw it and it broke my heart," said Kelly Smith, who was eating lunch at the restaurant. "His daughter was on TikTok pleading to the public to help her dad because he was running out of business because of the Covid thing. I saw it and it broke my heart," said Kelly Smith, who was eating lunch at the restaurant when we spoke with him. A daughter took to social media in hopes that a few people might come back to her family's restaurant, Lee's Noodle House, in Santa Rosa, California.

The daily chef specials and long list of Cantonese specialities makes it a neighborhood must. There are many renditions of popular tofu dishes on the menu, like fish and tofu in black bean sauce, and  Cantonese-style soups that can take hours to make, like the crab meat fish maw soup. Seafood is a main draw here, including the salt and pepper shrimp, black bean clams, and salty fish fried rice. Hot Spot Nabe is a cozy, family-owned eatery with limited seating that specializes in healthy Cantonese cuisine. Their menu boasts an extensive selection of traditional Cantonese soups, including the meticulously prepared pepper pork belly chicken soup, which requires hours of simmering.

Hidden inside a nondescript parking lot is a small mom-and-pop spot that’s been around for decades. The affordable Cantonese barbecue meats are better tasting than the big-name establishments in the area. In fact, ACC is a wholesaler to many popular San Gabriel Valley restaurants that cannot afford to have a barbecue master in-house. The restaurant serves both an Americanized and a traditional Chinese menu, along with daily specials like Hong Kong egg waffles, beef noodle soup, and even a handful of non-Cantonese dishes.

Korean banquet noodles, or janchi guksu, are proof that Korean flavors aren’t necessarily a dialed-up, in-your-face affair. With a helping hand from zucchini, puffy morsels of fried bean curd and zucchini for texture, it’s a slightly unorthodox but delicious rendition of the Korean wedding favorite. Ho Kee is known for its roast duck and array of Cantonese and Hong Kong comfort dishes, but the specialty is its see fong choi (private kitchen dishes). These specialty menu items, which can be on the pricier side, include abalone and sea cucumber, winter melon soup, steamed egg custard in crab shell, garlic steamed razor clams, and jumbo shrimp. Whether it's jjajangmyeon or jjamppong, you can't really go wrong with the Korean Chinese options at Lee's Noodles.

Their commitment to healthy cooking aligns with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, ensuring nourishing and wholesome meals. It’s worth noting that the rice platters are freshly steamed upon ordering, so some waiting time should be expected. The Congee offers humongous portions of wontons, lo mein, fish balls, beef balls, and other Hong Kong-style dishes, but its namesake congee is the star. Congee, pronounced jook in Cantonese, is a porridge made from rice usually served for breakfast or at dim sum.

The place serves traditional herbal teas and herbal medicinal soups, but the star dish is the clay pot rice. A Hong Kong specialty, clay pot rice (bao zai fan) is a one-pot meal that is similar to Korean bibimbap. The bottom of the rice is crispy while the rest of the rice is moist and steamed with ingredients like mushroom and bamboo shoots, Chinese sausage and pork ribs, or salted fish with ground pork and tofu.

They also offer a selection of higher-priced fresh seafood options, including garlic-steamed Alaska king crab, lobster, tiger prawns, live fish, Dungeness crab, and various clams. Tam’s Noodle House opened during the pandemic selling only frozen Hong Kong-style wontons and dumplings. Now that on-site dining is allowed again, the restaurant serves Hong Kong- and Cantonese-style cafe foods like curry fish balls, barbecue pork, beef stew lo mien, steamed rice roll, and Hong Kong-style milk tea.

Tam’s offers three varieties of egg noodles, including wonton-style egg noodles, rice noodles, and flat egg noodles. A hallmark of a true Hong Kong-style cafe is a menu with enough variety to give the Cheesecake Factory a run for its money. The menu here, which varies at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, has something for everyone. There is a wide array of standard classics like pork chop baked tomato rice, pineapple buns with pork cutlet, clay pot rice, congee, noodles, and scallop fried rice. There are also an array of Chinese-American dishes like honey-glazed spare ribs and honey walnut shrimp.

Alice’s Kitchen is operated by the family that opened the original Delicious Food Corner in Monterey Park. The best dim sum to order is the special “To To” ma lai go sponge cake, which is layered with salted duck yolk and made using a recipe from a famous Hong Kong chef and food personality (梁文韜). The suckling pig and lobster meal for 10 people consists of a half order of suckling pig, five lobster dishes, as well as stir-fried noodles, roasted garlic chicken, and dessert. Delicious Food Corner is a chain of Hong Kong-style diners with multiple locations in the San Gabriel Valley. Known for its quick service and budget-friendly prices, the restaurant serves a diverse range of Cantonese and Western dishes.

Where Was House Party Filmed? 2022 HBO Movie Filming Locations

house party martin lawrence

“They’re my homegirls, but we smoked them.” (Neither Campbell nor Johnson could be reached for comment.) All parties brought their A-game, so the audience is the true winner. House Party isn’t just one of the most important black films ever made—it’s one of the most important films of the late 20th century, a movie that showed Hollywood the breadth of the black experience, and the immense interest in it. Part of why House Party resonated then and continues to now is that kind of warm authenticity.

Comedy show

While they played teenagers, they were nearly a decade out of high school. Comedian Robin Harris was on the verge of breaking big when he appeared as Pops, Kid's strict father, in "House Party." Pops forbids Kid to attend Play's party, given that it takes place on a school night and Kid has homework to do. Once he realizes Kid has sneaked out of the house, he angrily searches for him. Apart from his work as a producer, songwriter, and funkmaster, he's known for his colorful hair and outfits, his outsized personality, and his incalculable influence on other musicians, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Tupac Shakur and beyond. Though he's had some hardships, including substance abuse, he's come out the other side as funky as ever, getting sober in 2019 and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Grammy that same year. Though Martin Lawrence was the biggest star to come out of "House Party," George Clinton was the biggest one in it — despite only appearing in a cameo.

Full Force rewrote a lot of their scenes and added the "we're gonna kick your f-ing ass," chant.

The duo carried this atmosphere over into their big-screen debut, which was also the first effort from writer-director Reginald Hudlin, who would go on to helm projects like Boomerang and produce Django Unchained for Quentin Tarantino. The film was a critical and popular success, spawning sequels and, decades later, a remake that's being produced by LeBron James. Back in 1986, Harvard University undergrad Reginald Hudlin won an award for his short thesis film “House Party”. Three years later, he and his older brother writer/director/producer Warrington would expand the short into a full length first feature. The original script was written with the intention crossover Rap superstars Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince would play the main roles but they declined so the script was modified for Kid of Kid N’ Play to occupy the role originally intended for Will “Fresh Prince” Smith.

John Witherspoon

Kid and Play get into a dance contest with attractive girls Sydney and Sharane (originally it was Kid and Groove against Sydney and Sharane, but after Groove gets drunk and passes out, Play takes his place), then have a freestyle battle. Stab and his friends attempt to crash the party but are arrested a second time for attempting to burn the house down. At the very beginning of the movie, kids dance inside of a house, and the noise is so loud that it blows the roof off. The careless property damage might be worth it if there were any stakes or sense of narrative momentum to the script by Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori. Kevin keeps claiming he needs to throw the party to earn money for his daughter’s school (custody seems to be a factor), because his musty homemade beats aren’t making him any money, and his parents (Bill Bellamy and Nia Long in an unfortunately short appearance) are selling their home. Damon’s motivation seems to be that he just wants to floss in a borrowed mansion for the ’gram.

House Party (1990 film)

Sure, its R-rating is earned—there is no shortage of raunchy jokes—but it feels true to Black teenage experience in a way that audiences hadn’t seen in a major film since Cooley High. These were young Black people who aren’t sanitized—they face issues like cop harassment, after all—but who also aren’t “at-risk” necessarily, and whose lives aren’t neatly divided into stereotypical boxes. The movie shows you Black kids from the projects and from middle-class suburbia—and they don’t seem all that far away from each other, geographically or culturally. But never looks or feels like the same backdrop as Boyz N the Hood or Colors; it feels like this story could be anywhere in Black America.

The principal cast was rounded out by actress Tisha Campbell, video vixen & dancer A.J. Johnson plus members of Full Force as the antagonists, Stab (Paul Anthony), Zilla (B-Fine) & Pee Wee (Bowlegged Lou). “House Party” was shot in California during July 1989 before the soundtrack was done and Kid N’ Play were working on their sophomore LP. Harris' comedy was known for its explicit language and its side-splitting jokes. He had a small role as a bartender in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" and a larger one as Sweet Dick Willie in "Do The Right Thing," as well as playing Jerome in Eddie Murphy's "Harlem Nights" that same year.

Martin Lawrence: Bilal

house party martin lawrence

In an interview with DJ Vlad in 2017, Lou said he rewrote a scene—including adding Pee-Wee's high-pitch nasally voice and his infamous sing-songy declaration to "kick your f--king aa-ass" and showed it to the Hudlin brothers. "We killed it and Warrington Hudlin looked at us and said, 'Keep it!'…. After that, I changed all of our f--king scenes in there," with his brothers' help, Lou said. Stab, Pee-Wee and Zilla aka the bullies who tormented and chased Kid throughout the entire movie and then tried to light Play's brick house on fire, were played by Full Force (Paul Anthony, Bowlegged Lou and B-Fine). But Lou, who'd been a theater buff, said their bully roles were "kinda plain, kinda bland, kinda like with no personality," so they re-worked them to give them some personality. The Hudlin brothers were just striking while the iron was hot using the momentum generated by recent films made by Black filmmakers. Little did they know how integral their film would become to not only helping to make Rap music and Hip Hop culture break into the mainstream in 1990 but pave the way for what would be regarded as a Black film renaissance the following year.

Robin Harris was a rising star in the world of stand-up comedy at the time he was cast to play Pop, the father of Kid's protagonist in House Party. He'd already gotten his start in movies, appearing in late '80s classics like I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Harlem Nights, and Do the Right Thing. As Pop, he was the hard-edged disciplinarian trying to keep his son out of trouble, and coming down hard when his rules weren't obeyed. He's last seen just before the credits roll, preparing to punish Kid for his night of debauchery. Martin Lawrence was a fresh-faced 25 year-old when he appeared in a supporting role in House Party, with his only previous film credit coming in Spike Lee's drama Do the Right Thing.

“House Party”: A 25th Anniversary Retrospective

They accepted and in September 1990 the show “The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air” became a hit out of the gate for NBC. The Hudlins also had a cameo as thieves chased by an attack dog who jumped on the bus to escape it. “House Party” hit theaters on March 9th, 1990 via New Line Cinema and even though it only opened on 520 screens it averaged almost $9000 per screen and landed at #3 in the box office opening weekend making almost double its $2.5 million budget.

However, they do not do anything after realizing that Kid's only condom is too old to be used. When Sydney's parents come home – now revealed as one of the couples at the high-school reunion, including the man Kid ran into – Sydney helps Kid sneak out of the house. Rather than miss the party of the year, Kid sneaks out while Pop is sleeping. On his way to the party, Kid is stopped by the neighborhood police and runs into Stab and his brothers, jumps over a fence where a fat man named Roughouse is having sex.

Hip-hop was written into House Party’s script, but it went over the heads of many studio executives. Although the genre was rising in popularity during the late ’80s, and hip-hop-centric films like 1983’s Wild Style, 1984’s Beat Street, and 1985’s Krush Groove had become cult favorites, it still wasn’t on the average exec’s radar. Grillo says the staff at New Line’s New York office was well aware of hip-hop’s rising influence because they rode the subways and walked the streets, unlike their Los Angeles counterparts.

The good news is that Mitchell would go on to demonstrate a much wider range, with House Party serving as a launchpad for a long and venerable screen career. The '90s, in particular, were good to him, with roles on The John Larroquette Show and in the classic sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, in which he hilariously portrayed the grown-up Tommy Webber. After House Party, Johnson's acting career moved in fits and starts, leading her to roles in films like Sister Act and Baby Boy, and to television in a main role on Sirens and episodic turns in Chicago Hope and JAG, among others. Her most notable work, however, has been in the world of fitness, where she's become a wellness coach and the host of VH1's series Flab to Fab. She has served as a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society, and as Lindsay Lohan's life coach in the 2014 Oprah Winfrey Network docu-series Lindsay, demonstrating she's not afraid of any challenge. Comedians were cast in several key roles or did cameos in numerous scenes that helped the film flow perfectly.

He manages to get out of another scrape with Stab and his brothers, and they all end up in a jail cell. Kid entertains the rest of the men in the cell by rapping, distracting them long enough for Play, Sharane, Bilal, and Sydney to arrive and bail him out. After Play and Bilal drop him off, Kid sneaks in the house and gets undressed. As he is about to get into bed, he looks up to find Pop holding a belt as he prepares to spank him. Several pivotal scenes for ‘House Party’ were taped in Los Angeles County, the most populous county in California and the United States. The production team of the HBO Max movie set up camp in South Central Los Angeles, a region in southern Los Angeles County, to record some important sequences.

He gives Kid a beat to rap over while Kid is trying to avoid Stab and his brothers. Throughout "House Party," two white cops stop most of the major characters and hassle them. Played by Barry Diamond and Michael Pniewski, they're only referred to as "Cop #1" and "Cop #2" in the credits, though Robin Harris' Pops reads their badge names as Boyd and what sounds like Warnoski.

She's part of the crew that helps bail Kid out when he's jailed for fighting Stab and his crew, and the pair cap their night with a passionate kiss. Reginald Hudlin went on to direct “Boomerang”, produce the animated Adult Swim series “The Boondocks”, write for Marvel’s “Black Panther” as well as become President Of Entertainment for BET. He also co-wrote the highly slept on script turned graphic novel “The Birth Of A Nation” with Aaron McGruder. Once the Hudlins were no longer involved with the “House Party” franchise the films got further and further away from what initially made them resonate with audiences. There’s a reason why “House Party” still works 25 years after it was first released in theaters. Another interesting twist is after Will Smith & Jazzy Jeff turned down the lead roles in “House Party”, Quincy Jones and Benny Medina pitched them the idea of starring in a TV show instead.

The looks on the faces of the partygoers when Kid took the mic and the DJ threw on some beats and started scratching was priceless as I’d seen that same look plenty of times on my own parents’ faces. The members of Groove B. Chill had minor roles, Darryl “Chill” Mitchell kept bumping the tables as Bilal was trying to mix and Groove got so drunk he had to be removed from the party. Full Force completely rewrote their characters’ dialogue (adding their catchphrases, of course) so they didn’t come across like the archetypal bullies Brian “B-Fine” George and Paul “Paul Anthony” George played in Krush Groove. “I said look, if [the Hudlin brothers] don’t like it, I’ll go back to the original script—as boring and bland as it may be,” George remembers, explaining how he improvised to make the trio feel three-dimensional. “And as soon as they saw us do it, they gave us the thumbs up.” Hudlin gave the rest of the cast similar latitude. It doesn’t matter how we get there, but I want to get there in your voice,’” Reid says.

To date, there have been five installments in the House Party series.

House Party was about to prove there was potency in putting black people in the center of a universal experience. As “Pop,” Harris was the grumpy-but-hilarious dad–attempting to catch his wayward son, Kid, after the teenager sneaks out to attend the shindig at Play’s house. But the movie became a major part of a legacy that has continued in the decades since his death. The late John Witherspoon also makes a memorable appearance as an angry neighbor—one of many scene-stealing appearances he would have in classic Black comedies throughout the 1990s.

In 1990, a little movie starring several hip-hop acts made a huge impression on the movie-going public. That movie, "House Party," spawned several sequels and a host of imitators. Plot-wise, it's like any other film where a teenager hosts a party full of whacky hijinks while parents are out of town. After meeting Reid in a New York City club and bumping into him a few more times, Hudlin eventually got him to read the script. “I remember reading the original script, and we had been approached before by people trying to do movies with us, but this was the best thing I’d read.” Kid ’n Play had booked a tour and stood to lose money if they opted to do the movie, fueling apprehension from an already uninterested Martin. “When you’ve got rap kingpins like Run-DMC doing a movie that a lot of people don’t remember or know like Tougher Than Leather, I was like, ‘If those guys can’t do a movie, then who are we to think we could achieve such a thing?

Crashing the reunion, Kid has the DJ scratch and mix a few of his old doo wop records so that he can liven the party with a rap, until Stab and the others arrive. Kid and the bullies are caught by the neighborhood police, who humiliate the teenagers before letting them go. Kid's father is stopped and harassed by the police while trying to find him. Minter's part in House Party was fairly minimal, but it wouldn't be the last that audiences would see of her.

AJ Johnson choreographed Sidney and Sharane's dance scene.

Director Reginald Hudlin expanded House Party into a feature film from a 20-minute short of the same name that he completed for his senior thesis project at Harvard University in 1983. Be the life of your viewing party by sharing these 15 behind-the-scenes tidbits about House Party. Actress Kelly Jo Minter plays LaDonna in "House Party," one of the many girls grabbing Play's interest. She has some of the best reactions to Bilal's halitosis and Groove and Chill's weak attempts to hit on her. In "House Party," Martin Lawrence's Bilal has to contend with the disrespect Play gives his DJ equipment even as he's being pressured to provide free DJ services for Play's party, and the disrespect he gets from almost everyone because of his vicious case of halitosis.

It hasn't been all winning, as Lawrence has faced his share of off-camera drama, including arrests and a health scare during which he fell into a three-day coma. Still, he is far and away the biggest name to emerge from the House Party cast. Kid 'n Play came from the lighter side of hip-hop, providing a feel-good vibe that was all about having fun, which would serve as a stark contrast to the harder-edged gangsta style that would take over rap music in the '90s.

After a decade of classic 80s teen movies like Weird Science and Pretty In Pink, films that mined the angst of coming of age but from a decidedly white perspective, here was a film telling a story of Black teenage culture at the dawn of the 1990s. Critics raved, and took note of House Party’s uniquely African-American lens. Much like the film itself, the casting process for House Party all started with a song.

Comedy

They had a choice —pay a settlement or be in two New Line movies with their salaries going toward the amount of money they owed. After House Party, Witherspoon remained incredibly active in both film and television. He was perhaps best known for playing a pair parental figures, in the classic comedy Friday and on the sitcom The Wayans Bros. While those roles stand out, his ubiquity in both film and television over the past couple of decades meant you almost couldn't miss him if you tried. He also remained active as a stand-up comic, touring as recently as 2011.

It's a tricky proposition, which means the successes should absolutely be celebrated, especially when they hold up as well as the much-beloved 1990 comedy House Party, starring rappers Kid 'n Play. The legacy that “House Party” leaves is it opened the door for the Black film boom of 1991 and Kid N’ Play are overlooked pioneers alongside MC Hammer in crossing Rap music over and making it widely accepted in mainstream circles. At the time “House Party” hit theaters MC Hammer’s sophomore LP “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em” was flying up the charts as was Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison”. MTV Raps” and “The Arsenio Hall Show” were introducing Rap to middle America and Fox’s sketch comedy series “In Living Color” would debut the following month led by Black Pack members Kenan Ivory Wayans and his brother Damon Wayans who further helped to make Rap and urban culture go mainstream that year. George Clinton had another cameo in “House Party” playing a DJ at a party Kid stumbled upon which served to highlight how Rap was viewed by our parents.

“The Black Pack” consisted of Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Mr. Paul Mooney, Robert Townsend, Keenan Ivory Wayans, his brother Damon Wayans and many of their collaborators (which also included a young Charlie Murphy). If you wait until after the initial credits roll, there is a mid-credits sequence that shows the roof that flew off in the film’s opening sequence falling on the police officers who antagonize the characters throughout the movie. A.J. Johnson, the actress who plays Sharane, choreographed the girls’ dance moves in this sequence. When director Reginald Hudlin needed actors for his movie, he got in touch with Salt-N-Pepa’s producer, Hurby Azor, who also served as Kid ‘n Play’s manager, and asked if he knew of any talent. He was banned from NBC programs in 1994 after making exceedingly rude jokes while hosting "Saturday Night Live." Besides being sued by Tisha Campbell in 1997, he's had several other problems, as detailed in The Washington Post. In 1999, he collapsed from heat exhaustion and was in a coma for three days.

There was no way anyone could’ve expected for “House Party” to have the impact it ended up having. The 1990 movie, written and directed by Reginald Hudlin, was a major financial success for New Line, earning $26.4 million at the box office and cult status with fans. The movie also features Tisha Martin-Campbell, Martin Lawrence, A.J. Johnson, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Full Force (Paul Anthony, Bowlegged Lou and B-Fine). The roles that went to Kid ‘n Play were originally meant for DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince himself, but they declined. Ironically, Kid ‘n Play turned down the opportunity to star in the NBC sitcom that eventually became The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, starring DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith.

A remake of Reginald Hudlin’s eponymous 1990 cult classic, HBO Max’s ‘House Party’ is a comedy movie directed by Calmatic (Charles Kid II) that revolves around a wild house party, as you can guess by the title of the film. When a high school student’s parents go away and leave him home alone, he sees this as a perfect opportunity to host a grand party and have some fun. With several of his friends and high school mates joining the bash, it turns into a wild night full of dance, hip-hop, antics, and fun adventures.

House Party was released on March 9, 1990, and became an instant classic. Tisha Campbell had one of the more robust résumés among the young House Party Cast, having made her first TV appearance at the age of six and appeared at 18 as one of the Greek Chorus singers in the film version of Little Shop of Horrors. Her Sidney was Kid's love interest, a spirited, intelligent teen with some sweet dance moves and an absolutely outstanding '90s-era sense of style.

Thanks to a bone marrow transplant from his brother, Lou, Anthony is currently in remission, and works to raise money for cancer research through The Paul Anthony Foundation. Play became a born-again Christian in the mid-90's and produced Christian hip hop music, then moved into directing and film producing. He directed a documentary in 2007, "Welcome to Durham, USA," about Los Angeles-area gangs the Crips and Bloods branching out into Durham, North Carolina, and produced the documentary, "And iDanced," in 2018, which he recently discussed with CBS New York.

The “House Party” soundtrack played a key role in the film’s success although it didn’t do well commercially itself. It wasn’t technically considered a flop because this was before Black films released soundtracks that moved units. A better way to gauge the popularity of the film would be to look at individual tracks that were featured on the soundtrack and how they did. Kid N’ Play’s sophomore LP “Funhouse” dropped right after the film opened which completely overshadowed the soundtrack. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the classic coming-of-age comedy House Party.

What began with Chill pressing Kid to show him a particular maneuver turned into the scene that defined the entire movie. It’s impromptu, transitioning quickly from a sequestered kitchen exchange to the heart of the party. The scene pits Kid ’n Play’s brash, free-form style against Campbell and Johnson’s fluid, Soul Train–esque method. “I think what we were able to accomplish was an abstract tribute to different forms of music,” says Martin. It was the product of intense choreography and sweat in a dance studio that, due to the cast and crew’s bond, never felt like a chore. “That was just a walk in the park for us,” says Reid, adding that those were moves they sharpened through live performance.

Auburn tallied its first run off of Holman in the third inning on a bunt single that turned into two bases because of an errant throw from Holman to first. Consecutive groundouts scored the unearned run and gave Auburn the first lead of the night. LSU put another runner in scoring position with less than two outs in the seventh when Larson hit a one-out double, but White and Pearson struck out to end the inning.

"(I was) just looking for something up at my hip that I could drive," Pearson said. "I had kind of been chasing (pitches) down all night. Rev. Kelvin Sauls and his wife, Rev. Judi Wortham-Sauls  provided leadership from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2018. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Rev. Sauls brought to Holman years of experience in, and passion for, congregational vitalization and community transformation. Still growing and pressing on, the congregation purchased its first permanent building, a former Jewish Synagogue on the Corner of Cimarron Street and Jefferson Boulevard. Reverend Lanneau L. White was appointed as the first permanent pastor of Holman.

The double-stack cheeseburger, crunchy gentleman, and bone marrow are all back, along with new additions like a raw bar, Sunday roast, breakfast, and many more seafood dishes. Holeman provides complete siding installation, impact window and door installation, and shell construction services in all of the listed Florida counties, cities, and surrounding areas. For chef and co-owner Linton Hopkins, the reopening of Holeman and Finch is like returning home.

"... That game had every potential not to be 3-2 in the ninth inning with a walk-off win if we execute offensively the way we need to, in terms of within bats." But White and Jared Jones snapped LSU out of it with back-to-back solo home runs in the third inning, handing it a 2-1 lead. Tommy White struck out, but Pearson ripped a ball well over the center fielder's head to score Milazzo and end the game. Saturday's heroics against Auburn weren't quite as heroic, but Josh Pearson's walk-off double to secure LSU's 3-2 win at Alex Box Stadium was a big deal. It secured LSU's second consecutive series victory in Southeastern Conference play during a time when wins are a must for this team if it wants to reach an NCAA regional.

In Fuller’s day, blues players had made a living busking around Durham’s tobacco warehouses during the harvest season. Holeman and Lyon played house parties as well as joints where people of color had to order food from the back door in those Jim Crow days. Blind Boy Fuller was immensely popular at that time, and Holeman was influenced by his recordings of the distinctive Piedmont sound. The Piedmont region encompasses a chain of foothills that runs between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic coastal plain, from Virginia through North and South Carolina and Georgia down to Florida. Holeman and Finch at Colony Square features a raw bar with seating for four people serving oysters and shellfish towers. Even the kitchen is customized to Hopkins’s exacting standards, including a shelf for sausages and plenty of storage for the many jars of put-up preserves and pickled vegetables used in dishes throughout the year.

He and his wife Bernice, and their three sons arrived from the Washington Conference on July 14, 1947. God blessed and guided this fledgling group of committed individuals and the congregation grew in numbers and Christian service. At that time, Dr. Calvin Holman, Superintendent of the Los Angeles District of the Methodist Church was instrumental in officially organizing the church and Morgan Chapel was later re-named Holman. As Holeman's dancing skills developed, he teamed up with Fris Holloway, an experienced "patter" and blues piano player. Together, and independent of each other, the two were able to produce rhythmic complexities — Holeman on the floor and Holloway on his own body. The pair performed at house parties before taking their work on the road throughout the South.

Spectacular concrete and glass house offers an oasis in the Arizona desert

desert house

This is a way to make the construction process quicker and easier and to turn a disadvantage into an opportunity. A specific example would be this rather impressive house designed by architect Marmol Radziner. It’s built on a raised platform which makes it look as if it’s hovering in mid air, quite the sight considering how big the house is. Concept in place, we began fleshing out the spaces and movement through the house. We wanted the experience of navigating the house to remind one of traversing the site outside.

Hidden Rock Development Homes (Zion, Utah)

The architects were aiming to “make the best of living in this place” of Alice Springs in Australia. It’s not exactly desert, but the immediate landscapes could convince you otherwise. This Las Vegas house is a layered structure that has a lot of textures that progress from the basement up, much like the structure of the soil. The inner courtyard enjoys a livelier grass in comparison with the front yard planted with waterless plants. Comprising three angular wings, the dwelling was planned with an entry lobby with the Arcade courtyard and an interior garden.

With all these features to choose from, $10,000 of design studio credit is just the cherry on top.

Looking at it from the outside, this resembles a big rectangular volume with large openings and sliding glass doors and windows that ensure a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor areas. From the inside however you can see that the entire house is organized around a central courtyard and has a sort of O shape. Floor-to-ceiling windows open the space out to the courtyard and offer panoramic views of the vast desert landscape. The two wings of the house sprawl out across the site, framing various outdoor spaces. A courtyard is sandwiched between the bedrooms and living spaces, while a swimming pool sits in the south-east corner and a sheltered triangular patio points northwards. Sited in Scottsdale, the Bradley residence was oriented with living spaces along a topography that drops 12 feet.

It was designed by Wendell Burnette Architects and it has a very interesting floor plan. The residence’s stepped foundation was designed as an open platform emerging from the surrounding landscape. The Stone Court Villa is designed with layered limestone walls to establish several open and sheltered spaces. It employs monolithic material expression and few distinguishing characteristics, with different degrees of access between the landscape and the building inhabitants. The interlocking stone walls aid in creating a flow between the carved and open areas in this desert house. The Desert house floats above the desert landscape supported by a sunken platform. Expansive frames define the sheltered living spaces that combine indoors and outdoors, while also expanding and linking the home to the north wing, which houses additional functions.

We’re looking at a contemporary vacation house that’s been built on a sloping desert site. It’s surrounded by rocky patches of land and not a lot of vegetation except for cacti but that’s actually what makes this such an interesting location. The project was done by studio nüform and the house is structured on a single floor but nevertheless it’s raised off the ground wuite a bit due to the sloping terrain. This all-black house in the Yucca Valley desert was designed by Los Angeles office Oller & Pejic to look "like a shadow" (+ slideshow). Most Southwest house plans are built in New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California, but you'll also see them in western Texas and the desert regions of Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.

Gorgeous Skow Residence by Design Build Bluff

This unusual shape is owing to the gentle sloping of the ground, which recedes the home by about 12 feet. Glass partitions separated the interior while providing views of the rugged terrain. The elegant interiors of this modern desert house blend effortlessly with the context’s rustic desert vistas. As one wanders around the house, they will encounter oasis-like characteristics such as big succulents, streams, rustic but modern materials, and so on. This house’s minimalism embraces the mountains, the view, the link to the surroundings, and the waterways.

Clad in rusty steel mesh, silvery larch and grey cement fibreboard, Guy Holloway designed this house made up of three adjoining cabins in the remote landscape of Britain's only desert – Dungeness. Cladding made from recycled glass protects the walls of this cabin, designed by students from the University of Colorado, from the harsh desert sun and open winds. Designed to resemble a shadow, this desert house by Oller & Pejic features black walls, so that it is easy to rest the eyes on when the sunlight is painfully harsh. That’s why the Desert House, built in 1946 by Austrian-born architect Richard Neutra for retail tycoon Edgar J. Kaufmann, stands out all the more.

desert house

Modern designers are challenging this perception by designing stunning desert homes that epitomize opulence. These desert homes are remarkable architectural wonders that also serve as functional homes for contemporary residents. A Navajo woman and her four children were in need of a stable home after escaping an abusive environment. The house is elevated four feet off the ground to allow for natural ventilation and a rocket stove heats the family in the winter.

The result is a contemporary twist on a pitched roof house with huge windows that open up to the preserved vegetation and natural desert site. With its contemporary elements like half open spaces and numerous glass inclusions, the house looks ultra contemporary. Also known as Yucca Valley House 3, this contemporary black structure is one of the most stylish desert homes we’ve seen.
